Abstract

Background & Statement of the problem: Ensuring application of the Saudi Building Code is crucial for the well-being of children with disabilities; it plays a vital role in establishing inclusive accessibility for them. However, decline in implementation persists, attributed to a range of challenges impede its effective application.

Objectives: Research focuses on evaluating effectiveness of the application of the Saudi Building Code for children with disabilities in Saudi Arabia. It aims to explore the obstacles, challenges, and potential solutions by delving into the firsthand experiences of parents.

Methods: Narrative qualitative curriculum is employed, utilizing semi-structured individual interviews as the primary method for collecting evidence. The study involved (8) participants who were parents of children with disabilities residing in Mecca.

Results: Findings from the initial question revealed that parents perceived application of Saudi building code for children with disabilities as falling short of the required quality standards. Responses to second question highlighted challenges, such as toys predominantly designed without consideration for the characteristics of children with disabilities, presence of risk factors associated with toys, and a general lack of adherence to safety regulations. Results from third question pointed towards a variety of proposed solutions to enhance and refine the Saudi building code for children with disabilities. Including measures like ensuring safety in public spaces.

Conclusions (Recommendations and contributions): The author advocate for a heightened focus on the advancement and practical implementation of the Saudi building code for children with disabilities. This entails ensuring the built environment is maximally accessible to individuals across various disability groups, emphasizing the importance of inclusive design principles.
